Make it Work!

A business is not about a single invention or a single thing.  It’s about replication and scalability.  Ouch!  Are those two words just too much to handle?

Replication– it’s so much more than doing the same thing again and again and again.  It’s about quality control.  It’s about volume.  It’s about providing a positive customer experience each time and every time.  It’s not okay to make one dress at a time if the goal is to sell dresses to Walmart or Nordstrom’s.  It’s about making a hundred dresses in different colors and different sizes for different seasons for different customers.

And that takes us to scalability.  That’s the key word associated with the ability to grow.  Growth doesn’t always come evenly.  One this week, two next week, three the next.  Growth comes in fits and starts.  Growth is frequently unpredictable.  Scalability represents the idea that you and your business can meet the growth as it comes and when it comes.

HOW?  That’s right.  HOW are you and your business going to be ready for the growth?  That’s what your notebook is for.  That’s what planning is all about.  Thinking about HOW to manage as volume increases.  It’s not just about the marketing, it’s about how you are going to meet the demand that you’re hoping to build.

“Make it work” has become too simplistic a phrase.  In business, “making it work” means creating a product or service, and an entire business, that is pleasing to both the user (the customer) and the provider (your company).  It’s about creating a balance between what is and what can be.
