The Crystal Ball for People Counting

leave a comment »

The good news and the bad news all at once.  Figuring out how many people are going to do business with you is really, really difficult.  We call this “estimating traffic” and the best predictor of future traffic is past experience.

And what if there is no “past experience?”  What if it’s a new business?  Your new business.  How do you estimate traffic?

That’s why new businesses start out with a GRAND OPENING banner and a party and an advertising campaign.  It’s about getting the word out so new customers and prospective customers can start coming into the store, visiting the website, and ordering services.

Make sure you have a plan for your Opening Day, Opening Week, or Opening Month.  Get all your mailing lists organized.  Go through all the business cards you’ve ever collected.  Think about picking up the phone and calling everyone you’ve ever known… don’t leave it all to email.

Some rules of thumb that might be worth thinking about:

  • People need to hear something three times before they remember it once.
  • It takes AT LEAST six “touches” (email, phone, letter, twitter, personal contact, etc.) to break through the clutter.

Plan accordingly.
