Ever try on 25 pairs of jeans?

leave a comment »

What does trying on 25 pairs of jeans have to do with starting a business?  Plenty.

When’s the last time you walked into a store and purchased the first pair of jeans that crossed your path?

Wouldn’t even consider it?  No way.

First decision is which store or stores to enter.  Then there’s the perusal of the merchandise to find jeans that look like they might work.  Then there’s the trip to the dressing room to try them on.  Then there’s the decision between this pair and that pair, if you should be so lucky as to find two pair that look and feel good, to determine which pair will be a quality addition to your wardrobe.

So how come, when doing research for your business, you Google a term, look at the first page and take whatever you find?  Relevant or not. (Most likely, not.)

Maybe it would help you to think about finding information on WHO, WHAT, WHERE, and HOW in terms of jeans.  The first answer is not necessarily the right answer, the only answer, nor is it the answer you should “go with.”  Try different search terms till you find one that gives more and better information sources.  Try a couple different resources – Google, dogpile, your local library, the library at your alma mater.  Keep your eyes open for additional information even after you’ve gotten some that is helpful.

Consider checking out Research Beyond Google.

Certainly figuring out your business requires a greater investment in time and energy than buying a new pair of jeans.

After all, the goal of the business is to afford to buy as many pairs as you want.
